Abstraction is the process of taking away or removing characteristics from something in order to reduce it to a set of essential characteristics. This was pioneered by James McNeill Whistler in the early 19th century.
Mary Ellen Bute was an animator that made abstract work. She made work based off of music and rhythm in “New Sensations in Sound”(1934).
Sara Petty was another example but with kinetic movement instead of music. Her film “FURIES (1975)”, is described as a study in movement and composition and an exploration of the mysterious consciousness
I am simplifying the kinetic motion of martial arts. I will use cutout animation to represent bo staff techniques. I will cut out shapes in paper and use stop motion animation to express movement and the gracefulness of combat. I will also use elements of rhythm abstraction to add to the aesthetic of the piece.
